The student learning outcomes for the degree are as follows:

  • Students who complete the undergraduate Mathematics Teaching major should be able to reason mathematically and be good problem solvers. Students should understand the role mathematics has played in solving important problems in a variety of disciplines, e.g., physics, engineering, and business.
  • Students who complete the Mathematics Teaching major should have mastered the fundamental concepts necessary to obtain certification to teach mathematics in the secondary schools.

The B.S. program provides the mathematical preparation necessary for teaching secondary-school mathematics in Indiana and is designed to meet standards for teacher certification. Information on additional requirements for teacher certification is available in the department office. You are encouraged to choose and complete a teaching minor. 

To earn a B.S. with a major in mathematics teaching, you must satisfy the requirements of IPFW (Regulations ), the College of Arts and Sciences (Colleges ), and the Department of Mathematical Sciences. Required course work appears below. (Note that you are not required to include foreign-language study.)  All EDUC courses must be a “C-” or better; Minimum 2.70 cum GPA in content area  & Minimum 2.70 cum GPA (IPFW/IU only)-(to enter Block 1); Minimum 3.00 cum GPA in content area & Minimum 3.0 cum GPA (IPFW/IU only)- (Student Teaching/Graduation).

Prior to your junior year, the Department of Educational Studies requires that you successfully complete EDUC F200/EDUC M101, EDUC W200 and the Pearson Core Academic Subject Assessment (CASA) or approved alternative before admission to the professional education program. You must also establish a minimum 2.70 GPA in the department’s designated list of courses and a 2.70 cumulative GPA for admission to this program. The Peason CORE content exam must be taken before the student teaching semester. You must apply for student teaching one year in advance of the semester you plan to student teach. You must also pass the Pearson pedagogy exam for Secondary Education, pass the CORE content exam, and achieve a 3.00 GPA in the department’s designated list of courses and a 3.00 cumulative GPA to obtain the teaching license. Core and Concentration (Major) Courses


Of the mathematics courses numbered below 26100, only 16500, 16600, and 17500 apply toward the degree; statistics courses must be numbered 49000 or higher to be counted. You must have a grade-point average of 2.0 or better with at most one passing grade less than 1.5 in courses used to fulfill the mathematics concentration.

Professional Education


Prior to being admitted to the teacher education program, you must complete the Initial Requirement courses and pass the CASA.

Science Courses


Three science courses from the departmentally approved list in the Mathematics B.S.  program under Sciences Courses.  Two of these courses must have labs included.

General Elective Courses


Sufficient additional credits to bring the total to 120. Some may be restricted depending on choices for general education requirements. You are encouraged to acquire a teaching minor (see School of Education for information).
