Introduction


The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering offers a dual degree in Computer Engineering and Electrical Engineering for those students that wish to pursue both degrees.  Students will complete all of the requirements for both the BSCmpE and BSEE programs.

Our students, while drawn from diverse backgrounds, are all extremely able and committed to learning. IPFW delivers an exceptional educational experience to engineering students, encouraging collaboration and teamwork throughout the curriculum.

Student Learning Outcomes


As a framework for the continuous improvement policy, the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering has adopted a set of program educational objectives that describe the anticipated accomplishments of our graduates 3 - 5 years after graduation.

The ECE department’s program educational objectives are to produce graduates who:

  1. Function and communicate effective to solve technical problems
  2. Advance professionally to roles of greater engineering responsibilities and/or by transitioning into leadership positions in business, government, and/or education
  3. Participate in life-long learning through the successful completion of advanced degree(s) professional development, and/or engineering certification(s)/licensure
  4. Demonstrate a commitment to community by applying technical skills and knowledge to support various service activities

The graduates from the dual BSCmpE/BSEE program will demonstrate that they have:

a. An ability to apply a knowledge of mathematics, science and engineering

b. An ability to design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data

c. An ability to design electrical and computer systems, components, or processes to meet desired needs within realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health & safety, manufacturability and sustainability

d. An ability to function as a team member on engineering projects, laboratory experiments, and/or multidisciplinary activities

e. An ability to identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems

f. An understanding of professional and ethical responsibility

g. An ability to communicate effectively

h. The broad education necessary to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global, economic, environmental, and societal context

i. A recognition of the need for, and an ability to engage in, life-long learning

j. A broad knowledge of contemporary issues

k. An ability to use the techniques, skills, and modern tools necessary for engineering practice

Accreditation


Both the Computer Engineering degree program and the Electrical Engineering degree program are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET.

Program Delivery


The Dual BSCmpE/BSEE program is delivered primarily through on-campus courses; however, some of the required General Education courses are available as hybrid and/or on-line courses and those can be used to satisfy the program requirements.

Declaring A Dual Major


Students interested in declaring a dual Computer Engineering/Electrical Engineering major can do so in one of two ways:

  1. If the student is an ECE student already actively enrolled in one of the two programs, they simply need to speak with their assigned academic advisor about adding the other program as their second major
  2. If the student is not a current ECE student, they will need to speak with an ECE faculty advisor, who will determine that the student has the required math and chemistry background to begin our programs

Program Requirements


In order to start in the Dual BSCmpE/BSEE program, a student must meet the following criteria:

  1. Math Placement at or above MA 15400
  2. Have taken CHM 11100 or 1 year of high school chemistry in the last five (5) years

General Education Requirements


Students in the dual Computer Engineering and Electrical Engineering degree program will satisfy the IPFW General Education Requirements by taking the courses listed below.

1) This plan satisfies the competency requirements and the credit hour requirements

2) For B5 and B6, if the student selects a course that does not meet ALL outcomes for that competency, he/she must take another course that meets the rest of the outcomes for that competency

3) All courses used to satisfy the General Education Requirements must be completed with a grade of C- or better

Category B: Interdisciplinary or Creative Ways of Knowing


The courses provided below will satisfy areas B4 and B7; in order to fulfill the requirements for area B5 and B6, students must choose from the list of approved courses.  This list can be found in the IPFW General Education Requirements section of this bulletin.

Category C: Capstone


Major and Supporting Courses Required for the Dual Degree


Senior Design Requirement


Both the Computer Engineering degree and the Electrical Engineering degree require two semesters of Senior Design.  The first semester, ECE 40500, is counted as fulfilling the General Education Area C8 requirement, so it is not listed here.

Technical Electives Required for the Dual Degree


Students pursuing the dual Computer Engineering / Electrical Engineering degrees are required to take a minimum of 12 hours of Technical Electives.

Remaining 6 hours from the list of approved Technical Electives


The remaining six (6) credits must come from the list of approved Technical Electives for the electrical engineering and computer engineering programs.

NOTE: A course cannot be counted toward both an undergraduate degree and a graduate degree, with the exception of the students enrolled in the 5-Year BS/MSE Combined Degree Program.

GPA Requirement


All engineering and technical elective courses used to satisfy any BSCmpE or BSEE degree requirement must have a combined minimum GPA of 2.0

Student Responsibilies


All dual degree students are responsible for satisfying the graduation requirements specified for their selected programs. Thus, it is essential that they develop a thorough understanding of the required courses, academic policies, and procedures governing their academic career.

All requests for exceptions to specific requirements must be made in writing and may be granted only by written approval from the appropriate chair or dean.
